Oh, oh, oh, It’s magic you know.
Never believe it’s not so.
One of the most wonderful things about a toddler is their imagination and their ability to believe in magic.
Part of what makes play so fun is providing that magical quality and seeing your kid’s face just light. up.
This is one of those special activities that is part magic and part science.
You can still teach your kids that mixing baking soda and vinegar causes a reaction that creates gas that blows up the balloon, but toddlers are still so young, that this activity will still have that magical quality to it.
Here’s how to make a little magic in your home.

For this activity, you’ll need:
- balloons,
- an empty plastic bottle (we used a 1 liter),
- baking soda,
- white vinegar,
- a funnel,
- a rimmed baking sheet (ours is full-sized)
First, put two teaspoons of baking soda into a balloon using the funnel. It doesn’t have to be exact.
Then, add some vinegar to the plastic bottle. Not too much. Just enough so that it’s around an inch high.
Carefully stretch the balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
When you’re ready, dump the baking soda from the balloon into the vinegar.
Watch the balloon “magically” inflate itself!
Your Turn to Make Magic Balloons
So maybe you won’t ever use this method to actually blow up balloons, but hey, maybe you’ll actually use it to entertain your toddler every once in a while.
Here’s the printable activity recipe.
