Did you know that The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is celebrating its 50 year anniversary this year?
It’s such a classic. If you don’t have it in your library yet, get it!
Besides being a great story about a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, there’s so much more to learn from the book.

In honor of The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s 50 years of being read to children everywhere… we did this cute hungry caterpillar craft using recycled food pouch lids. (After reading the book, of course.)
Here’s how we made our very hungry caterpillar craft.
How To Make This Caterpillar Craft
These food pouch lids are the best. I’ve spent a couple years collecting them, and now we have some in every color of the rainbow.
They’re fun to toss in a tub of water for some colorful sensory play, or in a large bin with colored bowls for color matching.
Today, we used them to make a very hungry caterpillar.
First, thread the lids onto a pipe cleaner. We used two red ones for the head, and several green ones for the body.
Then wrap the ends around the last lid on either end and twist to keep them from falling off.
Last, glue on a couple googly eyes and twist on a blue pipe cleaner between the two red lids for the antennae.
He turned out pretty cute.
