A DIY snowman ornament makes a great teacher gift, classroom or kid’s party craft, or family activity for the holidays.
It’s so easy for kids to make and looks absolutely adorable!
This is the first year I’ve had both kids in school. Elena started kindergarten in the fall, and Lia now attends preschool twice a week.
For Christmas, I decided to have the kids make snowman ornaments for their teacher gifts.
We paired the ornaments with store-bought cards and wrote a simple message inside.
Here’s how we made our ornaments.

Supplies
- blank wood slices with precut holes (I bought these online)
- twine and/or ribbon (the ornaments I bought came with this)
- white acrylic paint
- black acrylic paint (we used paint markers)
- paintbrushes
- orange foam sheet (we used glittery orange foam!)
- glue
- clear spray paint
How to Make Snowman Ornaments
Cover your work surface with cardboard or a washable tray.
Pour a small amount of white paint in a bowl and have kids paint each wood slice.
Elena covered her ornament completely in white. She used a paint brush as she doesn’t like getting her hands dirty!
But Lia made lots of dots with her finger.
You’ll want to wait a couple minutes for the paint to dry before moving on to the next step. If you do a thinner coat, the paint should dry pretty quickly. You just want the paint to be dry enough not to smudge.
While you wait, cut out long triangles for the snowman’s nose using orange foam. We used glittery orange foam to make our carrot noses, and I think it turned out really cute!
I like the dimensional look the craft foam sheet adds to the ornament, however you can use orange paint or construction paper if you prefer.
Allow kids to glue the noses on to the center of each white painted ornament.
Then, paint two eyes and dots for a smile with black acrylic paint.
Let everything dry completely. You can use a hair dryer on the cool setting to help the paint dry faster.
Finishing Touches on the Snowman Ornament
This next step gives everything a nice finished look and will help the paint stay intact for years to come.
Spray each ornament with clear spray paint to seal everything. Make sure to let each one dry completely before doing the other side.
Last, thread twine or ribbon through the holes and tie the ends. You can also tie a little bow onto the top of the ornament if you wish.
Your Turn to Make a Snowman Ornament
When making handmade gifts with kids, I find that simple is best. It looks nice, it’s so easy to put together, and kids can understand the steps and overall concept much more easily.
Making ornaments is a fun tradition that we’ve done with our kids these past few years.
These ornament crafts for kids would be perfect for a kids party or classroom activity.
