I decided to do potato print art with the girls one afternoon to celebrate the coming of Easter.

Stamping with vegetables is a fun way to make art.
I decided to use potatoes, which are kind of egg-shaped already, to make stamps that look like Easter eggs.
How to Make Potato Stampers
I cut two potatoes in half and used a sharp paring knife to cut out a few designs: polka-dot stars, stripes, the letter E, and a zig-zag.

Making Easter Egg Art with Potato Stampers
To keep things clean-ish, I covered the kids’ table with an old shower curtain liner and had the girls wear their art smocks.
Sleeved art smocks are pretty awesome for messy and wet activities as they are water-proof.
They’re really great to use on spaghetti night as well!

We used pastel colored construction paper to make our art with.
I poured small amounts of washable paint on a paper plate.
The girls dipped their potatoes in the paint and then pressed them on the paper.
Elena, age 3, made her prints nice and neat.
She was a little bummed that the E stamp didn’t work quite as well as the others. And it took some trial and error to figure out how hard to press, how much paint to spread on the potato, and how to lift the potato without smearing to get a good print.

Lia, age 19 months, watched me do one potato print and then decided she would rather paint her potato stamp instead of the paper.

She was much more excited about fingerpainting than potato stamping, and you can see above, she got pretty messy.
I sure was glad she had her art smock on!
