This simple, earthy Christmas tree craft was made using whole spices from our kitchen cupboard.
It smells so wonderful hanging up in our hallway, and my toddler loved doing this craft so much that she made three of them!
How To Make a Christmas Spice Tree
For this scented craft, you’ll need:
- whole spices: star anise, cloves, bay leaves, cinnamon sticks
- garlic peels (optional)
- glue
- cardstock
The process is simple: glue spices to your cardstock to make a Christmas tree.
For the trunk, we used a cinnamon stick.
Next, we added bay leaves for the branches. (Or do you call them boughs??)
For the star, we used whole star anise. This is one of my favorite spices because it’s just so pretty. I don’t use it a lot. Just to make pho and pork carnitas… and for crafts. As one does.
And for ornaments, we used whole cloves. Elena wanted to add “a ribbon,” so we sprinkled a bit of saffron on top of the tree for a pop of red.
And then to make snowflakes, I tore up some garlic peels, and Elena glued them on around the tree.
Where to Find Whole Spices at the Supermarket
Most grocery stores have whole spices available in their spice section. Around the holidays, they might put them in a different spot with other holiday and baking goods.
Another place to check is the Hispanic foods aisle or Hispanic grocery store. I usually find all the whole spices I need in little bags for a low price.
Your Turn to Make a Christmas Spice Tree Craft
What did you think of our Christmas tree craft? Of course, you can improvise with whatever spices you have in the cupboards. And go out and gather evergreen needles if you don’t have any spices.
The point of this activity is to spend time together this busy holiday season. We hope you give it a try!
