We’ve got a ton of buttons. I have no idea how we accumulated so many, but we seriously have a shoebox just FULL of buttons.
I keep trying to find things to do with them other than the obvious.
(We never seem to lose buttons, just accumulate them…)
I’ve made a button I Spy jar and a button coin bank, and I’ve even hidden buttons in a popcorn sensory bin.
But we STILL have MORE buttons.
So getting the idea to make a button wreath Christmas ornament just felt like a stroke of genius!
Make ornament + get rid of useless buttons = WIN!
(It doesn’t take much for me to feel like I’m winning at life these days! Haha.)
How We Did It: Making Our Button Wreath Ornament
I grabbed our most Christmasy buttons (which wasn’t much!), red and green pipe cleaners, and a little ribbon bow (left over from our pom pom ornament craft).
Side note: If you’re buying new buttons, go ahead and get a pack of red, green, or white! I wish I had had more Christmas colors for this craft.
Putting the buttons on a tray helped keep everything contained and looking pretty.
We threaded buttons onto our pipe cleaners one at a time. It was really difficult for my two-year-old to get the pipe cleaners through the tiny button holes.
The pipe cleaner would bend at the top when she tried pushing the button farther along.
I explained that she could hold the top part of the pipe cleaner and then pull the button towards the middle.
She got the hang of it eventually!
It takes quite a few buttons to make a little ornament wreath. And the ornament is a bit heavy!
Still cute though!
And look, it’s not just an ornament. It’s a crown, a bracelet, and a spyglass, apparently! So many uses…

Your Turn!
Supplies
– buttons, buttons, and more buttons
– pipe cleaners
– ribbon to make bows
Instructions
- Thread buttons onto a pipe cleaner, leaving about an inch to spare on both ends.
- Twist the two ends together to form a circle.
- Tie a bow with the ribbon on the twisted pipe cleaner ends.
- Hang on a Christmas tree and admire your new ornament!
If You Don’t Have Buttons…
If you’re not swimming in buttons, like I am, use pony beads instead! It’s easier for very young hands to thread onto pipe cleaners. You could do a pretty pattern, go monochromatic, or let your toddler string on any color she would like.
I think Cheerios or Fruit Loops could be a good option as well, though you won’t want to save that ornament year after year! It may be better to make a cereal necklace instead 😉
