Ready for blueberry, raspberry, & blackberry picking? These are the places in and around Indy where you need to go!
If you were looking for U-pick strawberries, here are the best farms to visit.
Have you ever been blueberry picking? It’s insanely labor intensive. The sun becomes unbearably hot, and what’s worse, your bucket never seems to get full.
Blueberries are delicious, sure, and there’s nothing in the world that compares to picking a handful of sweet, wild blueberries along a hiking trail in Acadia National Park.
Much as I’d rather be blueberry picking on a mountain in Maine, here we are in Indiana, where we’re forced to sweat it out on our flat, windswept farmlands with the sun beating down on our necks and shoulders.
But, this is our state and our berry bushes, and we’re going to pick these blueberries just like our grandparents and great-grandparents did before us!
Plus, my daughters LOVE blueberries and strawberries. And this is why we do it. For the children.
So let’s go pick them berries!
These are best pick-your-own blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry farms in and around Indy. (Addresses and map are at the bottom of the post.)
3 Things to Know Before You Go a’ Pickin’
You’ll get the best experience from your visit if you follow these three tips.
TIP ONE
Mid- to late June is the beginning of blueberry season in Indiana. Go in the morning to take advantage of the coolness and to get the best berries before everyone else does. Raspberries typically ripen in August. Each farm has different peak seasons, which brings me to my next tip…
TIP TWO
Always call ahead before you leave to make sure the farm isn’t out of berries and that the berries they do have are actually ripe.
TIP THREE
Dress appropriately. Boots are recommended (you’ll be picking in an open, possibly muddy, field, and there could be spiders, eek!). Wear bug spray and sunscreen, too.
BONUS TIP
Be sure to bring lots of little kids to do the picking for you. They’re lower to the ground, so they won’t have to bend as far down. Ergonomics, am I right?
