And the Frozen obsession continues…
My daughter, Elena (age 4), loves anything Frozen.
It’s inspired so much of her dramatic play and even our sensory play. We made Frozen slime a few months ago at her request.
So when I needed a quiet activity for her to do while I worked on the computer, making a sticker picture book was just the thing to keep her occupied and learning!
How to Make a Sticker Picture BOok
Elena has been growing increasingly interested in reading and writing, which makes my bookworm heart so happy!
To make her sticker book, I had Elena grab her Frozen stickers, colored pencils, and markers.
I made a book by cutting three sheets of construction paper in half lengthwise, then stacking them and folding them in half to make a book.
I stapled this book along the folded side, and ta da! The book was ready.
Writing in the Sticker Picture Book
I wrote “Elena’s Frozen Book” on the cover, and Elena decorated it with stickers.
I originally intended for her to trace the letters with marker, but she didn’t want to yet.
Elena chose a single sticker to put on each page.
I spelled out the names of the characters, or whatever it was she wanted to write on each page, and she very carefully wrote each letter.
She did get frustrated when words didn’t all fit on the page, or when she messed up writing. I helped her work through her frustration and then we came up with a solution to help her write her best.
Elena decided she would write everything in pencil so she could erase it if she didn’t like how the letters turned out. Then she would trace it with a marker later.
The Outcome
I found it interesting that she wrote some of the letters completely backwards, or upside down and backwards, and others she wrote correctly.
She also wrote some words from right to left instead of left to right!
That’s something we’ll have to work on later!
But overall, I was really impressed by how well she could write and how she persevered even when she was unhappy with how she wrote some of the letters.
Elena was really proud of her work as well. She carried that book around with her all day and read it to me, her dad, and her sister.
I hope she carries this resilience and love for learning with her for her entire life.
What Kind of Sticker Picture Book Will You Make?
What stories or characters are your kids into?
If they aren’t interested in writing, you could still make a picture book.
Simply write character names or sentences on each page. Have your kids use stickers and draw to illustrate the words.
Let me know how it turns out!
