Are you ready for some good, clean fun? Let’s jazz up the handwashing routine and make bath time exciting with this fancy butter slime play soap.
Last week, I went to LUSH with my mom and kids. I forget how much fun all their bath stuff is.
A salesperson gave us a demonstration of a fizzy bath bomb, which Elena loved. She was kind enough to also give us some samples of their FUN bubble soap, which is basically play dough soap.
When we got home, I played with the soap a bit before using it.
It reminded me a lot of this stuff we make that we call “butter slime” but I’d never made a version that you can use in the tub as soap.
After a bit of experimenting, I decided on this recipe.
It definitely doesn’t smell as good as the one from LUSH, but these are desperate times and we can’t get to the mall right now.
I’m happy to report that our homemade version is excellent for play and for bath time. I really liked playing with it, too!
How to Make Butter Slime Play Soap
I have a printable recipe for you at the bottom of this post and links to supplies used, if you need it.
This recipe can be doubled or tripled. I chose to make the amounts super small so as not to waste ingredients and so you can make multiple colors.
My one tip for getting this recipe right is to go by feel, not by only amounts.
I don’t know what type of soap you’re using or what food coloring or oil. Chances are yours won’t turn out exactly like mine. So use your senses to adjust for what you’re working with, and everything will turn out just fine!

Supplies you’ll need are:
- 1/4 cup cornstarch (aka cornflour)
- 2 Tbsp liquid soap (link is to the exact one we used)
- 1 tsp baby oil (any oil should work)
- a few drops of gel food coloring
Mix all the ingredients together.
It’ll take quite a bit of mixing for it to start coming together.
Knead the butter slime once you start seeing the food coloring get more evenly distributed.
Be careful though, because the food coloring could stain at this point.
You’re looking for a smooth, play dough-like consistency.
If it’s too sticky, sprinkle a teaspoon of cornstarch over the ball and knead in. Repeat this until you get the texture you want.
If it’s too dry, add a few drops of either the oil or the liquid soap.
*Note: This is “play soap,” so I can’t really guarantee its effectiveness. Please use real soap and clean water to wash your hands.
Playing with and Using Butter Slime Soap
Play with this just as you would butter slime.
Squeeze it, roll it, flatten it, twist it.
It won’t hold it’s shape like play dough, yet it will feel and look very much like play dough!
You can use this butter slime soap to wash your hands if you’d like. We prefer to wash with it in the tub during bath time!
Other things we like to do to jazz up bath time are wash toys in the tub and play with these awesome bath toys!
