So this rock letter matching activity is kind of a three-in-one deal. If you really break it down, there’s three different activities going on: shape matching, letter matching, and wrapping/unwrapping.

How to Set Up Rock Letter Matching
Grab a few rocks, a permanent marker, and a sheet of paper. We recycled a page from my desktop calendar.
Trace the rocks on the sheet of paper. I highly advise tracing with pencil and then going over that with marker.
You could stop right here and this would be a great activity for younger toddlers who could care less about letters.
However, if you have a preschooler or a genius toddler, then keep going!
Write a letter in the center of each rock outline. Write the same letter on each rock. Make sure the letters written on paper match the right rocks!
Wrap each rock with foil. Kids can help with this, or not, if you want it to be a surprise.

Our Rock Letter Matching Activity
Elena immediately got to work unwrapping each rock. Is there anything more tantalizing to a toddler than a wrapped object?
Must. Open. All. The. Presents!!!
Then, she wrapped them back up again… and unwrapped them a second time.
Finally, she started matching the letters.
We named each letter as she matched them. I chose all the letters in her name, plus a few extra that we’re learning the sounds of.
What WE’re Learning
Wrapping and unwrapping is great for building fine motor muscles.
Matching letters helps kids get practice in identifying individual letters and learning letter names.
Matching rock shapes is a visual-spatial challenge for kids, and a great stand-alone activity, as well.
Your Turn for the Rock Letter Matching Activity
You can present the activity any way you’d like. Wrap the rocks together beforehand, or do the matching first and then wrap them after. Or skip the wrapping altogether if you’re short on time!
