7 Colorful Rainy Day Activities
Some days it feels impossible to keep my kids entertained. And when the weather forces us to hunker down at home, it takes all my creative energy to keep them from tearing the place apart!
That’s why I put together this list of 7 colorful rainy day activities for toddlers. (Older kids will get a kick out of these, too!)
Having a plan for entertaining your kids at home makes rainy days just as fun as sunny ones.
Let’s turn this day around with these colorful, fun indoor toddler activities that are sure to brighten any rainy day!

Rainbow pasta jar
Dying pasta is a great rainy day activity. Although it takes two to three hours to completely dry, let’s face it, because of the rain, you’ve got all day to wait for that pasta to dry. You can use any type of pasta you want. Break up spaghetti into little pieces, or use ditalini or rotini like we did here and you can make a rainbow pasta bracelet, too!
Zig-Zag Pom Pom Rainbow
The key supply to this fun zig-zag rainbow is pom poms. Lots of pom poms. Though maybe if I had combined light and dark green and light and dark blue, I would’ve had enough… hmm…
We used contact paper to keep things fun and easy, but glue and paper would work just as well. (Though you probably would rather work on a table instead of on the wall.)
Color Sorting Sensory Bin
Not technically a rainbow, I know, but we sorted all the colors of the rainbow, so it counts! You don’t have to sort the exact same things we did, but I will say it’s definitely more fun with a variety of textures (hard, soft, smooth, rough, etc.).
Rainbow Cereal Necklace
Making cereal necklaces (or bracelets or crowns!) is always a great toddler activity. It’s taste-safe and it whips those fine motor muscles into shape. My big tip for you is to use craft lace to thread the cereal onto. Then you won’t have to mess with tape or poky wires.
Ice Cream Parlor Dramatic Play
What could possibly brighten a day more than six bowls of ice cream? All pretend of course! You can make this activity as simple or as elaborate as you like by adding a variety of toppings, scoops, and even menus and play money.
Foamy Bath Paint
Luxurious foamy bath paint is so fun to squish in your hands and smear all over the bathtub sides… Or if your kid is like mine, she’ll prefer to use paper and a brush and keep her hands clean until the temptation is just too much to resist!
Hidden Colors
This is one of my favorite baking soda and vinegar activities. The colors are all hidden under a layer of baking soda and you make it react with vinegar, the colors magically appear!
Your Turn to Do a Rainy Day Activity
If you’re stuck indoors, why not make the best of it? It’s your turn to do one of these colorful, fun rainy day activities.
Do one or do them all!
And if you are struggling to decide which one to do (I’m a terrible decision-maker as well!) I think you may enjoy taking on our 5-Day Activity Challenge.
We send you a new kid’s activity for five days, and it’s up to you to do each one. They’re five of our favorites, and the best part is: you don’t have to decide which one to do!
