In keeping with this week’s color sorting theme, let’s do this zig-zag pom pom rainbow activity.
Before you all go crazy with the comments, 1) I know the colors are not in rainbow order, and 2) I know rainbows don’t really come in zig-zag shapes. The kid wanted zig-zags, so zig-zags was what she got.
Plus, I used permanent marker, and once you draw with it, there’s no going back.
How to Set Up the Zig-Zag Pom Pom Rainbow Activity
As always, shopping links are given in the supply list below for your convenience so you can get the right stuff for this activity. If you shop through these links, I could earn a little something something, but any commission I earn will not cost you a single penny.
First, you’ll need the following supplies:
- painter’s tape,
- contact paper,
- permanent markers (because washable will smudge),
- pom poms (in every color of the rainbow)
Step One: Tape a large sheet of contact paper to the wall.
Here’s how a pro tapes contact paper to a wall:
- Tear off four pieces of tape and stick them to the wall.
- Then cut your contact paper. Hold it up to the wall, non-sticky side down. Peel off a corner, tape it on. Peel off the opposite corner, tape it down.
- Repeat for the remaining bottom corners.
- Then peel off the rest of the contact paper backing.
Step Two: Draw zig-zags with permanent marker.
Why zig-zags? Because I asked my three-year-old whether she wanted zig-zags or circles and she chose zig-zags.
Why permanent marker? As I said earlier, because washable will smudge.
And to answer your third question, no the permanent marker will not bleed through the contact paper.
I totally feel like a mind-reader right now.
Step Three: Sort and Stick Pom Poms onto the Zig-Zags.
You’ll have to press them pretty firmly. Ours started to fall down randomly after several minutes, which, as you can imagine, was very frustrating for our toddler participant.
The red ones with the sparkly tinsel were really hard to keep stuck on.
The one random lip gem stayed on beautifully.
BTW, make sure you have a lot of pom poms if you plan on going for the whole rainbow.
We kind of ran out.
I had to order another pack from Amazon Prime (hurray for one-day shipping).
Sadly I had to take the zig-zag rainbow down because the baby was trying to pick off the pom poms and eat them. So we never ended up using the new pack.
Next time.
See, this is what happens when you deviate from your regularly scheduled activity plan.
Your Turn to Make a Zig-Zag Pom Pom Rainbow
Remember to follow my tips for sticking contact paper on the wall so you can avoid the frustration. Also, don’t forget to get lots of pom poms.
