Today I have another super simple activity for you guys.
(If you missed the last post, Matching Lids and Jars, be sure to check it out and try it!)
Simple activities seem to be the easiest for everyone to attempt during the busy seasons, so I want to make sure you’re well-stocked with low-set-up, easy activities!
For today’s activity, all you need are these two things: salt and a tray.
I’ve added shopping links to the supply list below so you can get a better idea of what exactly to use. But, I’m willing to bet you have these two supplies at home already! In that case, you have no excuse to not try this activity 😉

How to Set Up and Use a Salt Tray
This activity is exactly what it sounds like: a tray of salt.
STEP ONE: Pour enough salt to completely cover the bottom of your tray.
I like using table salt because 1) it’s fine and sand-like; and 2) it’s sooo cheap and accessible.
We had this pink and purple wood tray already. I recommend using a colored tray so that there’s some contrast to the salt when kids draw in it. Make sure it has a rim like the one I’ve linked above so the salt doesn’t spill any more than it already will!
STEP TWO: Use your index finger to draw in the salt.
My daughter (two years old at the time) drew spirals and wrote letters with her index finger.
Other fun tools to draw with are:
- cotton swab,
- comb,
- small brush,
- popsicle stick,
- feather,
- small toy rake,
- toy cars and trucks.
The possibilities are endless.
You can use this salt tray to teach shapes, letters, and numbers, or just have fun with your kids. Those are the best kinds of activities, and why I like to do activities with my girls.
Your Turn
Alright, now it’s your turn. Grab a tray and box of salt.
I commission thee an official salt tray master.
Go forth and entertain thy toddler.
